To know the answer one must know how the fiber laser and the marking system works.

If you know about the laser marking then you probably know that the three most important settings that can be changed to affect how a part is marked are:

Firstly. Speed

The speed is defined by how fast the laser beam can travel to the material.

Speeds of 30 to 35 inches per second could prove to be fine for removing the anodizing on aluminum.

But the deep engraving into the metals will be better accomplished at a speed of 5 inches per second, making numerous passes on the part.

Secondly,Power

The laser can only put out the amount of power as it is designed for.

Excess power out of the laser will allow either more material removal or allow the part to be marked at higher galvo speeds.

A 20 watts laser can only put out 20 watts.

The appropriate amount of power can be assumed according to the to the material being marked and also the desired result.

Thridly, Pulse Frequency
Unless you have a CW laser, the laser puts out pulses of light instead of a continuous beam of light.

Each of these pulses has a very short duration and the pulse time is measured in a nanosecond.

There is a trade-off between the energy per pulse and the number of overlapping pulses.

There are other factors that can impact the quality of the mark such as fill density and spot size.

1. The cutting focus is above the workpiece

This is also called negative focal length because the cutting point is neither located on the surface of the cutting material,

but located above the cutting material. This focus mode is mainly suitable for cutting high thickness materials.

However, a disadvantage of this mode is that the cutting surface is relatively rough and not very practical for high precision cutting.

2. The cutting focus is inside the workpiece

This is also called focal length, this mode commonly used when you cut stainless steel or aluminum steel workpieces.

But the disadvantages of this focus mode are requiring large airflow,

sufficient temperature, and longer piercing time. So when you process high hardness materials such as stainless steel or aluminum workpieces, you can choose this focus mode.

3. Cutting focus is on the workpiece surface, the cutting machine focus is on the surface of the workpiece.

the workpiece upper and lower surface smoothness is different. Therefore, this mode should be used according to the process requirements.

Many clients are interested in marking colors on stainless steel. We always said it need mopa laser.But why? In fact, MOPA  laser is one of fiber laser, but its Pulse width and Frequency are adjustable.So it can mark different colors on stainless steel.

Mopa has more advantages than Q-switch laser source, and price is little higher than Q-switch.
*.About the laser type
If you only need to mark on aluminium anodised or powder coated materials as below, fiber laser is
enough.

2.If you need to mark black color on anodised aluminum as , you can consider MOPA laser.Fiber laser can only mark white or gray colors on it, not pure black color.

*About the laser power
If you only need to mark on the surface of the object, 20w is enough.If you also want to have a little depth,30w will be better and its marking speed is faster than 20w. And their prices have no big difference.
