Laser engraving – Elena

This section presents the peeling based on laser processing through examples.

Basic principles of paint peeling using laser markers

This process involves the use of a laser to peel the plastic coating from the surface, in order to expose the base material or the bottom coating.
In the following example of shifting lever processing, use coating removal is for removing the black plastic coating, to allow light to pass through. Laser paint stripping is also useful for removing layers in multi-coated plastics to expose. For example, black, black and red, or black, red and green.

Paint stripping example – Removal of instrument panel button cover

Application Explanation

Conventional methods required that printes products or that removes the product’s coating can use a removal agent (remover) or some other means. However, this requires each design mades printing plates. Or increases operating costs to cover the required chemical solutions. The use of a laser marker makes it possible to peel any design, through laser irradiation.
In recent years, cars with illuminated switches have become more common, which has resulted in a rapid increase in the adoption of laser marker methods.

By using a high power peak, the short pulse YVO4 laser marker allows momentary high energy irradiation of an object. This allows edges with a detailed finish, without any appling heat around the processing area. Besides this guarantees high quality processing, even for design surfaces.

Example 1 of surface peeling – ITO film removal

Application Explanation

Attaching the ITO film (transparent conductive film) to a glass substrate is an essential step in the manufacture of flat screens. In conventional methods, chemicals or the like are generally used for wet etch patterns. However, the use of such chemicals may require an expensive investment of equipment and operating costs tend to increase. Here, however, remove the film surrounding the circuit by using a laser marker, thereby blocking conduction with peripheral parts.

The use of a YVO4 laser with a short pulse and high peak power, ensures satisfactory processing. Without damaging the glass or film, and without increasing turbidity.

Surface peeling example 2 – Gold plating peeling of connector terminals

The purpose of this process is to prevent welding from rising (nickel barrier). The conventional method to avoid unnecessary plating was to use masks. But as the trend of reducing and miniaturizing products has progressed, the terminals have become thinner. This has led to the popularization of a post-processing that employs a laser marker capable of microfabrication.

The creation of a nickel barrier is a technique that creates an area with low weldability, between the PCB mount and the contact points. The creation of this area prevents welding from being lifted and the strength of the joint reduced.

Advantages of laser processing

Reduction of operating costs and better processing cycles

Eliminating the need to print plates and chemical release agents (removers) associated with conventional methods, results in drastic reductions in operating costs. In addition, conventional methods required changing printing plates with each design change. But laser markers allow you to change design simply by importing new data into the software, which helps to shorten processing times.
